Apple Liberty - Bare-Rooted

Apple Liberty is thought to be one of the top early apples bred for disease resistance, combining exceptional flavour and robust health qualities. These apples are characterised by their attractive red-blushed skin, crisp and juicy flesh, and a well-balanced sweet-tart flavour that further develops during storage. A Braeburn type apple, Liberty is a heavy and abundant bearer, featuring spur-bearing branches. The tree’s disease resistance and self-fertility make it a standout choice, particularly for organic growers, as it is highly resistant to black spot disease and generally requires little to no spraying.

Apple Liberty ripens around March, transitioning from pink buds in spring to beautiful white flowers, making it not only a practical but also an ornamental addition to the garden. Although it is self-fertile, for optimal fruit production, it is advisable to plant it alongside early-flowering cultivars such as Apple Braeburn. This arrangement enhances cross-pollination, resulting in a better crop. The fruits are excellent keepers, ensuring they can be enjoyed well beyond their harvest time.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
