Acer palmatum Japanese Sunrise is a striking deciduous tree valued for its vibrant bark and graceful, upright form. Throughout the year, its smooth bark transitions from green to fiery shades of orange and red, providing year-round interest. The delicate, lobed green leaves offer a fresh look in spring and summer, turning warm golden and red tones in autumn, creating a spectacular seasonal display.

Ideal for Japanese, courtyard, or woodland gardens, it also works beautifully as a specimen tree or in mixed borders where its colourful bark and foliage can be fully appreciated.

Thrives in partial shade to full sun, with protection from harsh afternoon light in hotter climates. Prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and benefits from shelter against strong winds.

Reaches a mature height of 4–5 m with a spread of 2–3 m, forming an elegant, upright tree with year-round appeal.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.

Trimming: Prune in late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant, removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning to preserve the natural shape, particularly for ornamental varieties like Japanese maples.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for trees or a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leggy growth.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the establishment phase and during dry spells, especially for shallow-rooted varieties like Japanese maples. Use mulch to retain moisture.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of verticillium wilt (wilting and yellowing leaves) and leaf spot diseases. Remove affected branches and ensure good drainage. Dispose of infected material to prevent the spread of disease.
