Aquilegia Little Lanterns

Aquilegia canadensis Little Lanterns is a compact, native columbine cultivar that produces vibrant red and yellow, lantern-like flowers from mid to late spring. The nodding blooms are rich in nectar, making them highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Its tidy size and charming form make it ideal for the front of borders or naturalistic plantings.

A beautiful fit for cottage gardens, wildflower areas, and woodland borders. Complements native, informal, or pollinator-friendly garden styles.

Prefers partial shade but will tolerate full sun in cooler areas. Grows best in well-drained, humus-rich soil with regular moisture. Space plants 20–30 cm apart for a natural yet full appearance.

Mature size: Reaches 20–30 cm tall with a compact, mounding habit.

Trimming: Trim back flower stems once flowering has finished to tidy the plant and potentially encourage a light second flush. Cut back all foliage to ground level in late autumn or early winter as the plant dies back naturally.

Deadheading: Deadhead regularly during the flowering season to extend bloom time and reduce self-seeding, unless natural reseeding is desired.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Aquilegias generally require only light feeding.

Watering: Water consistently during the establishment phase and in dry spells, particularly in spring and early summer. Once established, ‘Little Lanterns’ tolerates moderate drought but will flower best with occasional watering in prolonged dry weather.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids and leaf miners. Remove damaged leaves and treat infestations with insecticidal soap if necessary. Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails using organic barriers or pellets.

Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew, especially in humid or overcrowded conditions. Look for white, powdery patches on foliage—remove affected leaves and ensure good airflow. Avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk.
