Laurus nobilis, commonly known as the Bay Tree or Bay Laurel, is an evergreen shrub that is a culinary and ornamental gem, boasting glossy green leaves that are not only visually appealing but also serve as a cherished edible herb.
Originating from the Mediterranean region, the Bay Tree is a symbol of victory and honour. Its fragrant yellow flowers bloom in spring, paving the way for small black fruit that adds to its ornamental value. Beyond its beauty, the leathery, dark-green leaves are a staple in many kitchens, used for flavouring a variety of dishes.
Growing to a mature height of 8m with a width of 3m, Laurus nobilis showcases a compact, pyramidal shape. Its growth rate is slow, ensuring that it remains manageable for those who wish to shape it. Indeed, its amenable nature to pruning makes it an ideal candidate for topiary, hedging, or even as a dense, aromatic barrier in gardens. Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote, is a highly sought-after evergreen shrub for its compact growth habit and fragrant, deep purple flowers. Its aromatic foliage and striking flower spikes, which appear from late spring through summer, attract pollinators and provide a lovely sensory experience.
Lavender Hidcote is ideal for mixed borders, edging, and container planting. Well suited to gardens designed with Mediterranean, cottage, or formal styles, adding structure and classic beauty. This lavender prefers full sun and well-draining, slightly alkaline to neutral soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance.
Cut back after flowering to help maintain its compact shape and encourages new growth. Remove spent flower spikes to extend the flowering period. Grows to a height of about 30-45 cm and a spread of 45-60 cm, forming a rounded mound.

Prunus x yedoensis Awanui, commonly known as the Awanui Yoshino Cherry, selected by Keith Adams at his nursery in Awanui Street, New Plymouth. This stunning deciduous tree is vase shaped and renowned for its profuse display of pale pink flowers in early spring. The delicate, single blossoms cover the tree before the leaves emerge, creating a spectacular cloud of color. As the flowers fade, they are replaced by fresh green foliage that turns vibrant shades of yellow and orange in autumn.
It is perfect for use as a specimen tree or street or driveway tree. It thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. This tree is well-suited to various garden styles, including Japanese, cottage, and formal gardens.
When planting the Awanui Yoshino Cherry, space the trees about 5m apart to allow for their mature size and spread. Regular watering is essential during the establishment period, but once mature, this tree is moderately drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. Prunus x yedoensis Awanui is known for its relatively fast growth rate, making it a popular choice for creating quick and stunning visual impact.
