Bergenia cordifolia, commonly known as Heartleaf Bergenia, is a robust evergreen perennial valued for its large, rounded, leathery leaves and clusters of bright pink to magenta flowers that emerge on upright stems from late winter through early spring. The foliage often turns bronze or deep red in cooler months, adding year-round interest and colour contrast to shaded garden areas.
Ideal for woodland, cottage, and shaded urban gardens, it works well as groundcover, edging, or mass planting under trees and shrubs where low maintenance and structure are desired.
Thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, though it tolerates a range of conditions including dry shade once established. Space plants 30–40 cm apart for a dense, effective groundcover.
Mature size: Reaches 30–40 cm high and spreads 40–60 cm wide in a clump-forming habit.

It is a versatile plant and can be used as a groundcover when planted en masse, as a border to a garden bed or water feature or as a textured addition to mixed garden beds. It grows to 1m tall making it ideal for small or narrow gardens.
