Buxus suffruticosa, commonly known as boxwood or dwarf box, is a compact, evergreen shrub known for its small, rounded leaves and dense, slow-growing habit. This plant is particularly valued for its ability to form neat, low hedges and borders, making it a favourite for formal gardens and parterres.
Buxus suffruticosa is ideal for edging paths, creating low hedges, or defining sections within a garden, such as herb or vegetable plots. Its fine texture and slow growth rate make it suitable for intricate topiary work, where it can be shaped into various forms, including spheres, cubes, or more elaborate designs. Dwarf box fits well in formal, cottage, and contemporary garden styles, offering year-round structure and greenery.
Boxwood prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established and can adapt to a range of soil types, including clay and chalk, provided the drainage is good. For creating continuous hedges or borders, plants should be spaced approximately 20-30cm apart to ensure a dense, cohesive appearance. Buxus suffruticosa typically grows to around 50-60cm in height and width, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a low-growing hedge or border that is easy to maintain and provides a classic, formal look.
