Sequoiadendron giganteum Wellingtonian, commonly known as the giant sequoia or Giant Wellingtonia Redwood, stands as one of the most awe-inspiring species within the plant kingdom. Originating from the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, this monumental tree is a living testament to the ancient world, offering an unparalleled presence in any landscape.
The giant sequoia is renowned for its sheer size, with mature specimens capable of reaching astounding heights of over 76 metres, making it one of the tallest trees on Earth. Its girth is equally impressive, often spanning 6 metres or more in diameter. The tree's bark, a fibrous, fire-resistant layer, can be 30cm thick or more on mature trees, providing a unique defense mechanism against natural elements.
This Sequoiadendron has a denser and neater pyramidal growth habit with shorter scales of evergreen needle-like leaves arranged in spirals and a large tapering red trunk that becomes rounded with age.
In terms of growth requirements, the giant sequoia thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, with a preference for slightly acidic conditions. Tolerates dry, cold, and exposed sites. It exhibits remarkable longevity.
Ideal for large-scale landscapes along an avenue or laneway, parks and natural reserves where it can grow unencumbered.
6-10 m x 4 m after 10 years.
