Pinus pinea, commonly known as the Stone Pine or Umbrella Pine, is a majestic, evergreen tree, native to the Mediterranean region. It is highly valued for its ornamental value, as well as for its edible seeds (pine nuts), which are widely used in cuisine.
The tree has a distinctive shape, with a wide, umbrella-like crown and thick, rugged bark. The long, green needles grow in pairs and are quite dense, providing a lush and full appearance. In the spring, the tree produces small, yellow-green flowers that are not particularly showy but give way to large, edible pine nuts that are highly prized in Mediterranean cuisine.
Pinus pinea can grow up to 18m tall and 12m wide when fully mature, with a broad, spreading crown that provides shade and shelter. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and is relatively drought-tolerant once established.
