Arbutus unedo, the strawberry tree, is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the family Ericaceae, native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe north to western France and Ireland. It grows up to 5-10 m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 80cm. The leaves are dark green and glossy with a serrated margin. White bell shaped flowers provide a red berry with a rough surface and matures in about 12 months, in autumn, at the same time as the next flowering. It is edible; the fruit is sweet when reddish.
