Acer palmatum Katsura is a beautiful, deciduous Japanese maple known for its striking foliage and graceful form. In spring, the small, lobed leaves emerge in a brilliant shade of yellow-orange, gradually maturing to a soft green in summer. In autumn, the leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a spectacular display of colour. This compact tree is perfect for adding elegance and seasonal interest to small gardens, courtyards, and patios, or as a feature plant in mixed borders and woodland gardens.

Acer palmatum Katsura thrives in a sunny to partially shaded location, preferring well-drained, fertile soil with consistent moisture. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, but benefits from protection from harsh winds and extreme heat. Regular watering is essential, particularly during dry periods, to maintain healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Planting with adequate spacing of about 2-3 metres between trees ensures proper air circulation and room for growth.

At maturity, Acer palmatum Katsura reaches a height of approximately 3-4 metres and a spread of about 2-3 metres, forming a compact, rounded canopy. Its delicate, colourful foliage and elegant structure make it a standout addition to any garden, providing year-round beauty and interest. This Japanese maple is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance tree with stunning seasonal appeal.

Trimming: Prune in late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant, removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning to preserve the natural shape, particularly for ornamental varieties like Japanese maples.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for trees or a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leggy growth.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the establishment phase and during dry spells, especially for shallow-rooted varieties like Japanese maples. Use mulch to retain moisture.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of verticillium wilt (wilting and yellowing leaves) and leaf spot diseases. Remove affected branches and ensure good drainage. Dispose of infected material to prevent the spread of disease.
