Acer Moonfire
Acer palmatum Moonfire is a stunning Japanese Maple known for its elegant form and striking foliage. In spring, this cultivar produces dark red leaves that gradually deepen to a rich, almost black-purple hue over the summer months. As autumn approaches, the foliage transforms into a brilliant scarlet, creating a spectacular display of colour.
In the garden, Acer Moonfire is a versatile plant that enhances various garden styles, including Japanese, contemporary, and woodland themes. It can serve as a focal point in a small garden or add depth and interest to larger landscapes. This Japanese Maple thrives best in a sheltered garden area with partial shade, protected from strong winds. While it can tolerate full sun, the intense sunlight may scorch the delicate leaves. Acer Moonfire prefers well-drained, moist, and slightly acidic soils.
Space the plants about 2 to 3 metres apart to allow their graceful, spreading branches to fully develop. Mature Acer Moonfire trees reach about 3 to 4 metres in height and spread, forming a delicate and airy canopy. Their refined shape and vibrant foliage make them a cherished addition to any garden, offering year-round interest and a touch of elegance.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can stress the plant and reduce its ornamental value.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but monitor for aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of fungal diseases such as verticillium wilt and powdery mildew. Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged soil to prevent these issues. Remove any affected plant parts promptly and apply appropriate fungicides if needed.
