Acacia dealbata

Acacia dealbata, commonly known as the Silver Wattle or Mimosa, is a fast-growing evergreen tree celebrated for its fine, silvery-green foliage and abundant, fragrant yellow flower clusters that brighten gardens from late winter into early spring. Its soft, feathery foliage and vibrant flowers make it an elegant choice for adding colour and texture to larger landscapes.

Ideal as a specimen tree, in mixed borders, or for creating a light, airy screen in Mediterranean, native, or wildlife-friendly gardens. Thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, with good drought tolerance once established. Allow 4–6 metres of spacing between trees to accommodate its expansive canopy.

At maturity, Acacia dealbata reaches an impressive 8–12 metres in height and 6–8 metres in width, forming a broad, rounded shape. Light pruning after flowering can help maintain its form and promote healthy growth. This tree is also prized for its ability to attract pollinators and for its cut flowers, which are popular in floral arrangements.

Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and control growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to encourage healthy growth and prevent crowding.

Fertilising: Use a low-phosphorus fertiliser specifically for native plants in spring if needed. Acacias thrive in poor soils and typically require minimal feeding.

Watering: Water deeply during the establishment phase and during extended dry periods. Once established, Acacia dealbata is highly drought-tolerant.

Pest Control: Monitor for psyllids, which can cause leaf discolouration and damage. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Ensure well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Acacia dealbata is generally hardy but can develop fungal diseases if planted in overly wet or poorly ventilated conditions. Remove affected foliage and treat with fungicides if necessary.
