Acacia retinoides

Acacia retinoides, commonly known as the Ever-blooming Wattle or Swamp Wattle, is a versatile evergreen shrub or small tree known for its ability to flower almost year-round. It features bright golden-yellow, ball-shaped flowers that contrast beautifully with its slender, dark green foliage. Its reliable flowering and adaptability make it a standout choice for a variety of garden settings.

Ideal as a specimen tree, hedge, or screen in native, Mediterranean, or wildlife-friendly gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including sandy and clay soils, as long as they are well-drained. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant but can also handle periodic waterlogging, making it suitable for a range of conditions. Space plants 2–4 metres apart when used as a hedge or screen.

At maturity, Acacia retinoides grows to 3–7 metres in height and 2–4 metres in width, forming a dense, rounded shape. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its form and encourage bushy growth. This hardy species is a favourite for attracting bees and other pollinators to the garden.

Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed. Regular trimming is beneficial if grown as a hedge or screen.

Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus fertiliser formulated for native plants in spring if growth appears poor. Acacia retinoides thrives in nutrient-poor soils and rarely requires additional feeding.

Watering: Water deeply during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry spells. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering in extremely dry conditions.

Pest Control: Inspect for common pests like psyllids and scale insects, which may affect the foliage. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot. Acacia retinoides is generally disease-resistant but can develop fungal issues in poorly ventilated or overly wet conditions. Remove affected foliage and ensure good airflow around the plant.
