Acacia baileyana purpurea
Acacia baileyana Purpurea, also known as the Purple Cootamundra Wattle, is a stunning evergreen tree admired for its striking purple-tinged foliage and vibrant clusters of golden-yellow flowers in late winter to early spring. The silvery-purple young leaves provide year-round colour and create a striking contrast against its bright flowers, making it a standout feature in any landscape.
Ideal as a specimen tree, in mixed borders, or as a colourful screen in Mediterranean, native, or wildlife-friendly gardens. Thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, with excellent drought tolerance once established. Space trees approximately 4–5 metres apart to accommodate their broad, spreading form.
At maturity, Acacia baileyana Purpurea reaches 5–8 metres in height and 4–6 metres in width, forming a graceful, rounded canopy. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and encourages new growth. Note: Monitor for self-seeding, as this variety can naturalise in some regions.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed. Regular trimming can help manage its size and enhance its attractive purple foliage.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus, native plant fertiliser in spring if the plant shows signs of poor growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can harm Acacias.
Watering: Water deeply during the first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, 'Purpurea' is drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering in prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but monitor for psyllids, which can cause leaf damage. Treat infestations early with horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps.
Disease Management: Ensure well-draining soil to prevent root rot, as Acacia baileyana 'Purpurea' is susceptible in waterlogged conditions. Maintain good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
