Cistus lusitanicus, commonly known as Portuguese rockrose, is a charming evergreen shrub that has beautiful white flowers with dark purple spots in the centre of each petal. Flowers from spring right through the summer months. The plant has a bushy, spreading habit with dark green, slightly wrinkled, and sticky leaves that emit a fragrant resin when warmed by the sun.

In the garden, Portuguese rockrose is excellent for creating a Mediterranean or drought-tolerant landscape, offering both ornamental and aromatic qualities. Its showy flowers and attractive foliage make it a standout choice for sunny borders, rock and wildflower gardens. It is particularly effective in mass plantings or as an informal hedge, providing a natural, relaxed appearance.

Cistus lusitanicus prefers full sun and well-drained soil, thriving in poor, rocky substrates where other plants might struggle. It is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for water-wise gardens and regions with dry climates. For landscaping purposes, a spacing of about 1m apart is recommended to allow for natural growth and spread.

Typically ranges from 1-1.5m in height and width.
