Camellia tsaii

Camellia tsaii is an elegant evergreen shrub with a compact and almost trailing growth habit. Its small, delicate white flowers, often with a subtle fragrance, appear in late winter to early spring, providing a charming contrast to its dark green, glossy foliage.

It performs well as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or as part of a low hedge. Its modest size and graceful form make it suitable for smaller gardens or even as a container plant on patios and terraces. This camellia thrives in partially shaded to shaded areas, protected from the intense midday sun. It prefers well-drained, acidic soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Regular mulching helps maintain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool.

For optimal growth, plant Camellia tsaii with enough space to allow for good air circulation, typically around 1.5 to 2 metres apart. At maturity, Camellia tsaii reaches a height of approximately 2.5m and a width of 2m.

Trimming: Prune Camellia Tsaii after flowering in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy appearance.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, acid-forming fertiliser in spring and midsummer. Avoid fertilising after late summer as it can encourage new growth susceptible to frost damage.

Watering: Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, particularly during the establishment phase and in dry periods. Mulch around the base to help retain moisture.

Pest Control: Watch for common pests such as aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.

Disease Management: Look out for signs of root rot, camellia petal blight, and sooty mould. Improve drainage to prevent root rot, remove affected flowers promptly to control petal blight, and treat sooty mould by managing the underlying pest issues.
