Aloysia citriodora

Aloysia citriodora, commonly known as Lemon Verbena, is a deciduous shrub prized for its intensely fragrant, lance-shaped leaves that release a refreshing lemon scent when crushed. In summer, it produces delicate clusters of tiny white to pale lavender flowers, adding a touch of beauty and charm. This versatile plant is highly valued for its culinary, medicinal, and aromatic uses, making it a favourite in herb gardens.

Ideal for cottage gardens, herbaceous borders, or as a feature in pots near pathways or seating areas where its fragrance can be enjoyed. Thrives in full sun with well-draining soil. Protect from frost and prune regularly to maintain a bushy shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 60–80 cm apart for larger plantings or grow in containers for easier winter protection.

Reaches a mature height of 1.5–2 m and a spread of 1–1.5 m, forming a graceful and fragrant addition to any garden.

Trimming: Prune in early spring to shape the plant and encourage bushy growth. Trim back by up to one-third after flowering to maintain its form and remove any leggy growth.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, all-purpose fertiliser in spring and midsummer to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this may reduce the aromatic quality of the leaves.

Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and whiteflies, especially on new growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or encourage natural predators such as ladybirds.

Disease Management: Aloysia citriodora is generally disease-resistant but can develop root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure proper drainage and remove any affected parts if rot occurs.
