Penstemon Arabesque Red
Penstemon Arabesque Red is a striking and robust perennial known for its vibrant red, trumpet-shaped flowers with contrasting white throats. The upright flower spikes rise above a compact mound of semi-evergreen foliage, from late spring to autumn.
Perfect for mixed borders, cottage gardens, or as a vivid addition to containers. Its tall flower spikes bring vertical interest and contrast beautifully with other sun-loving perennials, such as salvias, echinaceas, and ornamental grasses. It is a magnet for bees and butterflies. Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, including sandy or loamy types. It is moderately drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal watering.
Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart. Grows to a height of 60–70 cm with a spread of 30–40 cm.
Trimming: In late autumn or early spring, cut back old flower spikes and stems to ground level to encourage fresh growth. Lightly trim throughout the growing season to maintain a tidy shape.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong flowering and encourage continuous blooms throughout the season.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. Avoid excessive feeding, as it can lead to lush foliage at the expense of blooms.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry spells. Penstemons prefer well-drained soil and are drought-tolerant once established.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though slugs and snails may occasionally attack young plants. Use organic controls like traps or barriers as needed.
Disease Management: Prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew by ensuring good air circulation and avoiding waterlogged soil. Remove any diseased plant material promptly.
