Lychnis Alba
Silene latifolia, often known as Lychnis alba or White Campion, is a charming and resilient perennial or biennial wildflower. It produces an abundance of delicate, pure white, star-shaped flowers from late spring through autumn, exuding a subtle, sweet fragrance, particularly in the evening. The flowers contrast beautifully with its soft, green, slightly hairy foliage.
Lychnis alba is perfect for wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, and naturalised areas, where its airy flowers add a relaxed, romantic feel. This plant works well in mixed borders, where its soft flowers provide contrast to bold or vibrant perennials. It can also be used to soften edges and pathways. Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It adapts well to poorer soils, including sandy or stony conditions, and is tolerant of occasional dry spells once established.
Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart. Grows to a height of 60–90 cm, with a spread of 30–40 cm.
Trimming: Cut back spent stems and foliage after flowering to encourage fresh growth and a tidy appearance. In autumn, trim the plant to ground level to prepare it for winter.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong the flowering period and prevent excessive self-seeding, as this plant can naturalise easily.
Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose, slow-release fertiliser in spring if grown in poor soil. Lychnis typically thrives without heavy feeding.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry periods. Once established, Lychnis is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free but inspect occasionally for aphids or slugs, which may damage new growth. Use organic controls if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew or leaf spot. Avoid waterlogging and remove any diseased foliage promptly.
