Hosta fortunei Albomarginata
Hosta fortunei 'Albomarginata' is a reliable, clump-forming perennial known for its attractive green leaves with clean, creamy-white margins. The broad, slightly wavy foliage creates a lush, textured mound, and in summer, pale lavender flowers appear on upright stems above the foliage. Growing to around 40 to 50 cm high and 60 to 70 cm wide, it is ideal for woodland, shaded border, cottage, and container garden styles.
Plant in partial to full shade with moist, free-draining, humus-rich soil. Protect from slugs and snails in spring as new growth emerges. Space plants 50 to 60 cm apart. Cut back dead foliage in late autumn and mulch annually to conserve moisture. A classic, low-maintenance foliage plant that adds contrast and structure to shaded garden areas.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stalks after flowering to neaten the plant. In autumn, cut back yellowing foliage as it dies down naturally. Tidy up remaining debris in early spring before new shoots emerge.
Deadheading: Not essential for performance, but removing faded blooms can improve appearance and reduce seed production.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth appears. In poor soils, a mid-season liquid feed can support lush foliage development.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, as Hosta fortunei ‘Albomarginata’ prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds-keep mulch clear of crowns.
Pest Control: Slugs and snails are common pests-use organic bait, copper tape, or traps to protect young leaves. Check regularly in damp conditions.
Disease Management: Ensure good spacing and airflow to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Remove and destroy any diseased or damaged leaves promptly. Avoid overhead watering to help prevent foliar issues. Divide every 3-4 years to maintain vigour.
