Bergenia cordifolia Wanaka Snow is a robust and evergreen perennial with broad, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that form dense, tidy clumps and provide year-round texture and colour. During cooler months, the leaves take on attractive bronze or reddish hues. From late winter through spring, Wanaka Snow produces charming clusters of crisp white flowers held on upright stems. Hardy and easy to care for, this plant is a reliable choice for adding elegance to shaded spaces.
Wanaka Snow is ideal for mass planting, underplanting, ground cover, or as edging along paths and borders. It fits beautifully into cottage-style, woodland, and contemporary garden designs. Pair it with shade-loving plants like ferns, hellebores, or astilbes. Thrives in partial to full shade but can tolerate morning sun. It prefers moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. While drought-tolerant to a degree, it performs best with consistent watering, particularly during extended dry periods.
Space plants 30–40 cm apart to create a lush, ground-covering effect while ensuring adequate airflow around the foliage. At maturity, grows to approximately 30–40 cm in height, with a similar spread.

Trimming: Remove old, yellowing, or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy appearance.
Deadheading: Cut back spent flower stalks after flowering to keep the plant looking neat and prevent unwanted self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy foliage and vibrant flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during extended dry spells. Mature plants are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional watering in hot weather.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant but watch for slugs and snails, which may chew on the leaves. Use organic control methods or traps if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure the soil drains well to prevent root rot. Remove any foliage affected by fungal diseases like leaf spot or powdery mildew, and improve air circulation around the plant.
This Bergenia variety features striking white flowers with evergreen foliage, making it an excellent choice for shaded borders or as a ground cover, offering year-round appeal.
