Ajuga Catlins Giant
Ajuga Catlins Giant is a robust and vigorous groundcover variety, prized for its large, glossy, deep green leaves with hints of bronze. In late spring to early summer, tall spikes of vivid blue flowers rise above the foliage, adding a striking vertical element to garden beds. Its lush and spreading habit makes it an excellent choice for covering large areas or suppressing weeds in shaded spots.
Perfect for woodland, cottage, or informal gardens, Catlins Giant thrives in partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soils. It is low-maintenance and ideal for underplanting trees, filling gaps in borders, or softening edges around pathways. Space plants 30–40 cm apart for optimal coverage.
Mature size: Grows up to 20–25 cm in height (including flower spikes) and spreads 40–60 cm, forming a dense, lush groundcover.
Trimming: Trim back spent flower spikes and any untidy or leggy growth after flowering to encourage fresh growth and maintain a compact form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote vigorous growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to weaker plants.
Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the establishment phase. Ajuga prefers moist but well-drained soil and can tolerate occasional drought once established.
Pest Control: Monitor for slugs and snails, which may damage the leaves. Use organic or chemical deterrents as needed.
Disease Management: Keep an eye out for crown rot, which may occur in poorly drained soil. Ensure proper spacing to improve air circulation and prevent fungal issues. Remove and dispose of any affected plants to stop the spread.
