Pittosporum Frankie's Folly is a compact variety of the native Kohuhu. It naturally grows into a rounded shape with a height and width of around 60cm. The leaves are glossy and lime green in colour, with a slightly wavy edge. This variety is hardy and low-maintenance, preferring well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It is often used as a hedge or as a specimen plant in small gardens, where its attractive foliage provides year-round interest. Pittosporum Frankie's Folly is generally frost-tolerant and can also withstand coastal conditions.
Trimming: Trim Pittosporum 'Frankies Folly' lightly in early spring to maintain its shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches throughout the year to keep the plant healthy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to leggy growth.
Watering: Ensure regular watering during the establishment phase and in periods of extreme dryness. Once established, Pittosporum 'Frankies Folly' is fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids and scale. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of root rot, especially in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering. If signs of fungal diseases appear, such as leaf spots or powdery mildew, treat with an appropriate fungicide and improve air circulation around the plant.
