Nothofagus menziesii

Nothofagus menziesii or Lophozonia menziesii, commonly known as Silver Beech, is a majestic evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It is renowned for its distinctive silver-grey bark and small, leathery, dark green leaves that create a dense, lush canopy. The foliage turns a bronzy hue in the winter, adding seasonal interest. This tree is ideal for use as a specimen tree in large gardens, parks, or as part of a native forest planting.

Silver Beech thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moist soil. It is adaptable to various soil types, including loamy and clay soils. This hardy tree is frost-tolerant and can withstand cold conditions, making it suitable for a range of climates. Regular watering during the establishment phase is essential, but once established, it requires minimal maintenance. Space plants about 4-6 metres apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.

At maturity, Nothofagus menziesii can reach a height of 20-30 metres with a spread of 8-12 metres, forming a tall and stately tree. Its dense canopy and attractive bark make it an excellent choice for creating shade and adding structure to the landscape.
