Metrosideros excelsa x umbellata Maungapiko, commonly known as Maungapiko Pohutukawa, is a unique evergreen tree that is a cross between Southern Rata and Pohutukawa. This hybrid incorporates the frost tolerance of Southern Rata with the large, profuse flowers of Pohutukawa, making it a robust and visually striking addition to any garden. The brilliant crimson-red flowers bloom in late spring to summer, creating a spectacular display against the leathery, dark green foliage. Its attractive, gnarled branches add year-round interest.

Maungapiko Pohutukawa thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moist soil. It is highly adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, and is particularly well-suited to coastal conditions due to its wind and salt tolerance. This hardy tree is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Regular watering during the establishment phase promotes strong root growth, and occasional pruning helps maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. Space plants about 3-4 metres apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.

At maturity, Metrosideros Maungapiko reaches a height of approximately 5 metres and a spread of about 3 metres, with a medium to slow growth rate. It reaches about 2 metres in height after five years. Its vibrant flowers attract pollinators, adding ecological value to the garden. This versatile and resilient tree is perfect for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance plant that offers stunning seasonal blooms and year-round interest.
