Discaria toumatou, commonly known as Matagouri or Wild Irishman, is a divaricating evergreen shrub native to New Zealand. It features dense, thorny branches with small, dark green leaves and white flowers that are sweetly fragrant. It provides a unique texture and natural thicket in the garden. It is rare in the North Island but common to find in dry shrublands of the eastern South Island.
Perfect for dry, coastal, and low-maintenance gardens, Discaria toumatou is ideal for creating natural hedges or defensive borders. Its thorny structure makes it an effective deterrent for wildlife while providing shelter for small birds. This shrub is well-suited to naturalistic, xeriscape, and native garden styles. This hardy plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, exhibiting excellent drought tolerance once established.
In it's natural habitat, Discaria toumatou reaches approximately 4m high x 2m wide but in cultivation usually only 1-2m high and wide. For optimal growth, space the plants about 1m apart to accommodate their spreading nature.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or damaged branches. Trim back overgrown or wayward branches to maintain a compact shape, but avoid heavy pruning as this can stress the plant.
Fertilising: Generally does not require much fertilisation. If necessary, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry periods. Once established, Discaria toumatou is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering.
Pest Control: Typically pest-resistant. However, keep an eye out for common pests such as aphids and scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Discaria toumatou is generally disease-resistant. Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged soil to prevent potential fungal diseases. Remove any affected plant parts promptly to prevent the spread of disease.
