Corokia buddleioides is a distinctive New Zealand native shrub admired for its wiry, interlacing branches and small, narrow grey-green leaves. In late spring and early summer, it produces small, star-shaped yellow flowers, which are later followed by attractive red berries, adding seasonal interest. Its intricate form and subtle colouring make it a unique structural element in the garden.
Best suited to sunny or partly shaded sites with well-draining soil, Corokia buddleioides complements native, coastal, and formal garden styles. It is highly tolerant of wind, drought, and coastal conditions once established. Plant approximately 60 cm apart if creating a hedge or allow more space for specimen planting. At maturity, it typically reaches 2-3 metres in height with a naturally dense and sculptural habit.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to shape, control size, or maintain a dense hedge. Minimal pruning is needed if grown as a specimen to preserve its natural form.
Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Rarely troubled by pests. Monitor occasionally for scale insects and treat with horticultural oil if detected.
Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, particularly in heavy soils. Remove any dead or diseased branches to maintain plant health.
