Brachyglottis greyi

Brachyglottis greyi is a tough, evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, known for its striking silver-grey foliage and clusters of bright yellow daisy-like flowers from late Spring to mid-Summer. The felted leaves provide year-round interest, contrasting beautifully with its vibrant flowering, and offering excellent resilience in coastal and exposed conditions.

A strong choice for coastal gardens, low-maintenance borders, or mass planting, it complements Mediterranean, native, and dry-tolerant garden styles.

Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Drought and wind tolerant once established, it thrives in poor or sandy soils. Space plants 80cm–1m apart for effective coverage and airflow.

Mature size: Naturally compact and spreading, reaching approximately 80cm–1m tall and up to 1.2m wide.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact, rounded form and encourage fresh, bushy growth. Remove any straggly or damaged stems. Older plants can be rejuvenated with a moderate cut-back in early spring, but avoid cutting into bare, woody stems with no visible buds.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads once flowering is complete to keep the plant tidy and promote continued vigour.

Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils, a light second feed in mid to late summer may help maintain plant health. Avoid overfeeding, which can result in soft, leggy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the first year to help establish roots. Once established, Brachyglottis greyi is drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Ensure soil is well-draining to prevent root issues.

Pest Control: Generally resistant to pests, though slugs or snails may occasionally feed on young foliage. Use bait or traps if necessary.

Disease Management: Root rot can occur in waterlogged soils—plant in well-drained soil and avoid excessive watering. Prune to maintain airflow through the plant and remove any dead or diseased material to prevent fungal issues.
