Blechnum minus

Blechnum minus, commonly known as Swamp Kiokio, is a versatile and attractive evergreen, perennial fern that adds a unique texture and colour to native plantings. Characterised by its arching, slightly leathery fronds, new growth often presents with striking red tones, especially when exposed in open areas, before maturing to a shiny deep green as they age and arch over. This fern is perfectly suited for moist environments, mirroring its natural habitat found in gullies and alongside streams. Thrives in both full sun and full shade and is cold hardy. Grows to a mature size of 50cm in height and 1m in width.

Caring for Blechnum minus involves simple maintenance practices to ensure its health and vibrancy. Old fronds should be removed as they become tatty and die back, and annual mulching with organic material will help retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth.
