Aristotelia serrata - Makomako/Wineberry occurs naturally throughout New Zealand in damp, disturbed forest margins. Makomako is used as a colonising plant for revegetation as it is easy to establish and grows quickly. It has panicles of rose flowers in spring followed by red-black berries and serrated green leaves that are purplish underneath. In the colder climate this tree is semi-deciduous. Can reach to a height of 6m and a width of 4m. Tolerates full sun to moderate shade and can withstand the wet. A great source of food for native birds.
