Grows best in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Space plants 30–50 cm apart to allow for spreading.
Matures to a height of 5–10 cm and spreads up to 60–90 cm, creating a dense, colourful carpet.
Trimming: Prune Acaena lightly in early spring to remove old or damaged foliage and encourage fresh growth.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support growth, particularly in poor soils.
Watering: Once established, Acaena is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Ensure well-draining soil to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Acaena is generally pest-resistant. Monitor for signs of aphids or slugs and treat with insecticidal soap or slug bait as needed.
