Strelitzia nicolai

Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, is a striking evergreen plant with large, banana-like leaves that lend a bold, tropical aesthetic to any garden. Its dramatic foliage is complemented by bird-shaped flowers with white petals and a dark blue 'beak', which appear in late spring through summer. This plant's upright, architectural form makes it ideal as a statement piece in large gardens or container plantings.

Perfect for tropical, coastal, or contemporary gardens, Strelitzia nicolai thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers fertile, well-draining soil with consistent moisture but is tolerant of short dry periods once established. Space plants 2–3 metres apart to allow for their broad growth and striking form.

This fast-growing plant can reach a mature height of 6–10 metres and a spread of 3–4 metres, making it an impressive choice for creating vertical impact or lush green screens.

Trimming: Remove dead or damaged leaves at the base with clean, sharp tools to maintain a tidy appearance. Trim spent flower stems if flowering occurs.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser during spring and summer to support robust growth. A liquid fertiliser every few weeks can also be beneficial during the active growing season.
Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during growth periods. Reduce watering in winter but do not allow the soil to completely dry out.
Pest Control: Occasionally susceptible to mealybugs and spider mites. Wipe leaves with soapy water or treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant, but ensure good airflow and avoid overwatering to prevent fungal issues such as root rot.
