Hoya carnosa

Hoya carnosa, commonly known as the wax plant or porcelain flower, is a highly sought-after houseplant originating from Eastern Asia and Australia. This perennial, vine-like species is popular for its thick, waxy foliage, unique curling vines, and striking flowers. The fragrant, star-shaped flowers appear in parachute-shaped clusters and may produce a sticky sap, adding to the plant's distinctive charm.

As a semi-succulent, Hoya carnosa is known for its adaptability and ease of care. It thrives with minimal care, making it an ideal choice for those who may not have much time to dedicate to plant maintenance. The plant's thick, succulent-like leaves contribute to its hardy nature, allowing it to survive even when somewhat neglected.

To grow Hoya carnosa successfully, place it in indirect light or partial shade, avoiding direct sunlight. The plant prefers warmer temperatures, ideally between 10 and 24ºC, and high humidity levels of 60% or more. Gently misting the leaves once or twice a week can help maintain the necessary humidity. Use a well-draining potting mix with a pH between 6.1 and 7.5, and water the plant only when the soil has dried out completely.

Hoya carnosa is mildly toxic to pets, so care should be taken to keep it out of reach of curious animals. Fertilise the plant once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) using a phosphorus-rich fertiliser to promote flowering. It is important not to cut the long tendrils, as leaves and flower clusters develop from these. Hoyas can be propagated from stem cuttings or by air layering and tend to thrive when slightly root-bound, meaning they can remain in the same pot for several years.
