Ligustrum rotundifolium - a narrow, erect shrub with round, lustrous, undulating black-green leaves. Spikes of cream flowers in spring. Very attractive foliage shrub. Excellent as a hedge plant, or for a formal garden. Hardy to frost, avoid very dry sites. Sun or semi-shade.
Trimming: Trim as needed to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Ligustrum rotundifolium responds well to pruning, so it can be kept neatly clipped as a hedge or lightly shaped as a specimen plant.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy foliage and steady growth. Compost or mulch around the base can also help maintain plant vigour.
Watering: Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. It grows best in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.
Pest control: This plant is generally fairly pest resistant, but check for common sap-sucking pests such as scale, mealybugs, whitefly, aphids, and mites if growth looks stressed or foliage becomes sticky or distorted. Treat early with horticultural oil or an appropriate insect control.
Disease management: Watch for leaf spot, powdery mildew, twig blight, cankers, wilt, and root rot, especially where air flow is poor or the soil stays too wet. Signs include spotted or yellowing leaves, dieback, and general decline. Improve drainage, avoid overhead watering, increase air circulation, and remove affected material promptly.
