Elaeagnus pungens Maculata, commonly known as Silverberry or Oleaster, is a striking evergreen shrub that brings vibrant colour and texture to the garden. This cultivar is particularly noted for its captivating glossy, dark green leaves with bold, variegated golden-yellow centres. In autumn, small, fragrant, silvery-white flowers appear, adding another layer of interest. These flowers are followed by small, red-brown fruits in spring, which are attractive to birds and wildlife.
Its dense, bushy growth habit makes it an excellent choice for hedges, screens, or windbreaks. It also works well as a specimen plant or in mixed borders where its colourful foliage can provide year-round interest. This shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, including poor and sandy soils. It is drought-resistant once established and can withstand coastal conditions, making it a versatile addition to many garden styles, including contemporary, coastal, and wildlife gardens.
is relatively low-maintenance. It benefits from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and encourage new growth. Planting should allow for a spacing of 1.5-2m to accommodate its mature size and ensure good air circulation.
At maturity, it reaches a height and spread of approximately 3-4m.
