Cephalotaxus fortunei, commonly known as Chinese Plum Yew, is a distinctive evergreen conifer appreciated for its lush, dark green foliage and graceful, arching branches. The needle-like leaves are arranged in two ranks, giving the plant a lush and full appearance. This slow-growing conifer can develop into a large shrub or small tree over time, providing a year-round green presence in the garden.

In the garden, Cephalotaxus fortunei is a versatile plant suitable for various garden styles, including woodland, traditional, and contemporary designs. It thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for shady borders, woodland areas, and underplanting beneath larger trees. This conifer prefers well-drained, fertile soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. It is also relatively drought-tolerant once established.

Space the plants about 2 to 3 metres apart to allow their broad, spreading form to develop fully. Mature Cephalotaxus fortunei plants can reach a height of 8 metres and a spread of 2 to 4 metres. With its lush foliage and graceful habit, this plant adds structure and year-round interest to any garden setting.

Trimming: Prune Cephalotaxus fortunei lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches throughout the year.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid excessive fertilisation as it can lead to weak, leggy growth.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment phase and in periods of drought. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Pest Control: Cephalotaxus fortunei is relatively pest-resistant. However, keep an eye out for scale insects and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.

Disease Management: Watch for root rot, especially in poorly drained soils. Improve drainage and avoid overwatering to prevent this issue. Remove and destroy any affected plant parts to reduce the spread of disease.
