Buxus suffruticosa, commonly known as Dwarf Boxwood, is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its dense, slow-growing habit and small, glossy, dark green leaves. This refined and tidy plant is perfect for creating neatly clipped hedges, borders, or topiary shapes, lending a formal, structured look to any garden. Its fine-textured foliage remains vibrant throughout the year, making it a timeless choice for low-maintenance landscapes.

Ideal for classic or formal gardens, Buxus suffruticosa is commonly used to edge pathways, define garden beds, or form elegant parterre designs. Its versatility also allows it to blend seamlessly into more contemporary settings, where it can add structure or serve as a lush backdrop to more colourful plantings. In containers, it can be shaped into ornamental forms or left natural for a more relaxed appearance.

This plant thrives in partial shade to full sun and prefers well-drained, moderately moist soils. It is tolerant of a wide range of conditions but will perform best when the soil is kept evenly moist. Space plants approximately 30 to 40 cm apart when creating a hedge or border to encourage dense growth and a full appearance.

At maturity, Buxus suffruticosa maintains a compact, rounded shape, growing up to 50 cm in height and spreading equally wide. Its refined form and slow growth make it an ideal choice for gardeners seeking year-round structure with minimal maintenance.

Trimming: Trim in late spring or early summer to maintain its compact shape, particularly if used as a hedge or topiary. Light trimming can also be done in autumn, but avoid cutting during frosty periods.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as Buxus is a foliage plant and does not require deadheading.

Fertilising: Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising as it can lead to weak, leggy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during dry spells, especially for young or newly planted specimens. Established plants are more drought-tolerant but still benefit from occasional watering during long dry periods.

Pest Control: Watch for box blight and box tree caterpillar. Regularly inspect for pests and remove caterpillars by hand or treat with an appropriate insecticide if needed.

Disease Management: Box blight is a common issue; watch for brown patches and leaf drop. Improve air circulation by avoiding overhead watering and pruning dense areas. If infected, remove affected areas and treat with a fungicide. Ensure good drainage to avoid root rot.
