Calamagrostis Karl Foerster is a stunning ornamental grass prized for its upright, clump-forming habit and tall, feathery flower plumes that sway gracefully in the breeze. This deciduous grass features narrow, green foliage that forms an elegant base, with vertical flower stems rising above from late spring to early autumn. The initially pinkish-purple flower heads mature to golden brown, providing seasonal interest well into winter. With its striking vertical form and delicate texture, Calamagrostis Karl Foerster brings height, movement, and structure to the garden year-round.

This versatile grass is perfect for adding vertical lines to garden beds, borders, or as an accent in contemporary or minimalist designs. Its tall, narrow habit makes it a wonderful choice for smaller spaces or as a backdrop for flowering perennials. Calamagrostis Karl Foerster is also ideal for prairie-style gardens, naturalistic planting schemes, and mass plantings where its rhythmic movement in the wind creates a sense of dynamism. It can also be planted in containers or used to create soft, informal screens or hedges.

Thriving in full sun, Calamagrostis Karl Foerster prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture but is also quite adaptable to various soil types, including heavier clay soils. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, though it will perform best with consistent moisture. Space plants approximately 60 cm apart to allow for its upright, spreading growth, ensuring air circulation and a natural grouping effect.

At maturity, Calamagrostis Karl Foerster typically reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 metres, with a narrow width of about 60 cm. Its tall, slender stems rise above its grassy base, creating a bold, vertical accent that provides year-round structure and interest in any garden setting.

Trimming: Cut back the previous year’s growth to the ground in late winter or early spring before new shoots emerge. This helps maintain a tidy appearance and encourages vigorous growth.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, which can lead to weak, floppy stems.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in periods of prolonged drought. Once established, Calamagrostis Karl Foerster is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but keep an eye out for aphids or other minor pests. Treat with insecticidal soap if infestations occur.

Disease Management: This grass is typically disease-resistant, but ensure good air circulation to prevent any fungal issues. Avoid overwatering and ensure the soil has good drainage to prevent root rot.
