Aciphylla aurea

Aciphylla aurea, commonly known as golden speargrass, is a striking evergreen perennial native to New Zealand. This architectural plant forms a clump of stiff, golden-green, spiky foliage that radiates outward in a bold rosette. During Summer, tall flower spikes emerge, bearing clusters of golden-yellow flowers that add vertical interest and attract pollinators. Its dramatic form and unique texture make it a standout in the landscape.

Perfect for rock gardens, dry borders, or native and coastal gardens, where its drought tolerance and bold structure can be appreciated. Thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, sandy, or gravelly soil. Aciphylla aurea is well-suited to exposed, windy sites and requires minimal maintenance. Space plants at least 50–70 cm apart to showcase their spiky form.

Reaches a mature height of 80–100 cm, with a spread of 60–80 cm, forming a compact yet eye-catching silhouette.

  • Trimming: Trim away dead or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring to maintain the plant's appearance. Avoid over-pruning, as the sharp foliage can deter grazing animals.
  • Fertilising: Aciphylla aurea typically thrives in low-nutrient soils and does not require fertilisation. If necessary, apply a light, balanced fertiliser in spring.
  • Watering: Water during the establishment phase and during extended dry spells, but ensure the soil is well-draining to avoid waterlogging. Mature plants are drought-tolerant.
  • Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but occasionally aphids may appear. Remove them manually or use insecticidal soap if infestations occur.
  • Disease Management: This plant is highly resilient to diseases. To prevent fungal issues, plant in well-draining soil and avoid overwatering.
