Blueberry Delite

Blueberry Delite is a hardy, mid-season blueberry variety valued for its consistent yields and distinctive, mildly tangy flavour. The berries are medium-sized with a powdery blue finish, ripening through mid to late Summer. This deciduous shrub also offers ornamental appeal, with white to pale pink spring flowers followed by a striking flush of reddish Autumn foliage.

Ideal for edible gardens, containers, or as a productive hedge, it complements coastal, cottage, and lifestyle gardens.

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-draining, acidic soil. Maintain even soil moisture, especially during flowering and fruit development. Allow 1.2–1.5m spacing between plants for best performance and airflow.

Mature size: Forms a rounded shrub reaching approximately 1.5m tall and 1.2m wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring while dormant. Remove any dead, damaged, or spindly branches to maintain an open structure and encourage strong new growth. On older plants, remove up to a third of the oldest canes at ground level to boost fruit production.

Deadheading: Not necessary, but remove any shrivelled or unpicked berries after fruiting to keep the plant neat and reduce fungal risk.

Fertilising: Use an acid-loving fertiliser (suitable for camellias or rhododendrons) in early spring, just as new growth appears. A light top-up feed in late summer may benefit overall vigour. Avoid lime-based products to preserve soil acidity.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during extended dry periods. Consistent moisture is essential during flowering and fruit development. Mulch with pine bark or other acidic organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Usually pest-free, but birds may target ripening fruit—protect with netting as needed. Watch for aphids or scale on new growth and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if seen.

Disease Management: Ensure well-drained, acidic soil to prevent root rot. In humid weather, monitor for powdery mildew—look for a white coating on leaves and treat with a sulphur-based fungicide if necessary. Maintain good airflow through pruning and spacing.
