Apricot Trevatt

Prunus armeniaca Trevatt is a highly regarded apricot variety, prized for its heavy crops of large, golden fruit with sweet, rich flavour. The juicy, firm flesh is excellent for fresh eating, bottling, and drying. Flowering in mid-spring, Trevatt ripens from mid to late summer and is known for its consistent performance and strong growth habit.

An excellent choice for home orchards, lifestyle blocks, and productive garden spaces. Complements traditional, Mediterranean, or edible garden styles.

Thrives in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Protect early flowers from late frosts and provide consistent moisture during fruit development. Space trees 3–4 metres apart to allow for healthy canopy expansion.

Mature size: Reaches 4–5 metres tall with a vigorous, broad, and slightly spreading form.

Trimming: Prune in late summer after harvest to maintain an open, well-ventilated canopy. Remove any dead, diseased, or inward-growing branches. Avoid winter pruning, as ‘Trevatt’ is highly susceptible to bacterial canker if pruned in damp, cold conditions.

Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. During fruit development, switch to a potassium-rich fertiliser to support flowering and improve fruit quality. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it clear of the trunk base.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in dry periods—especially during spring and early summer while fruit is swelling. Ensure good drainage, as apricots do not tolerate waterlogged soil.

Pest Control: Keep an eye out for aphids, mites, and leafroller caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Use netting to protect ripening fruit from birds.

Disease Management: Susceptible to brown rot and bacterial canker. Remove and destroy any infected fruit or branches promptly. Prune only during dry weather and maintain an open structure to improve airflow. Apply copper-based fungicide in late winter as a preventative.
