Prunus armeniaca Goldbar is a standout, late-season apricot known for its exceptionally large, golden-yellow fruit and rich, sweet flavour. The firm, juicy flesh makes it an excellent choice for fresh eating, bottling, and drying. Flowering in mid-spring, Goldbar ripens in late summer and is favoured for its heavy cropping and vibrant fruit colour.
An excellent addition to home orchards, lifestyle blocks, and productive garden spaces. Complements Mediterranean, edible, and traditional garden styles.
Plant in a sunny, sheltered position with free-draining, fertile soil and protect from late frosts during flowering. Maintain consistent moisture during fruit development. Allow 3–4 metres between trees to ensure strong growth and good airflow.
Mature size: Reaches 4–5 metres tall with a broad, slightly spreading canopy.
Trimming: Prune in late summer after harvest to maintain an open structure and remove any dead, damaged, or congested branches. Avoid winter pruning, as apricots are susceptible to bacterial canker through cold-weather wounds.
Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth. During fruit development, switch to a fertiliser higher in potassium to improve flowering and fruit quality. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it away from the base of the trunk.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment and through dry periods, particularly from spring to mid-summer when fruit is developing. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, and leafroller caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Use bird netting as needed to protect ripening fruit.
Disease Management: Prone to brown rot and bacterial canker. Remove and dispose of any infected fruit or branches. Prune only in dry weather to reduce infection risk and keep the canopy open for airflow. Apply a copper-based fungicide in late winter as a preventative measure.
