Malus domestica Ballerina Waltz is a compact, columnar apple tree producing medium to large, deep red fruit with crisp, juicy flesh and a well-balanced sweet flavour. Ripening in mid- to late Autumn, it’s ideal for fresh eating, juicing, and light cooking. The tree’s narrow, upright growth makes it perfect for small gardens, containers, or planting in rows where space is limited.
A great choice for urban, contemporary, and edible gardens, especially where vertical planting is needed without compromising fruit yield.
Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate moisture. Self-fertile but benefits from cross-pollination with other Ballerina varieties or compatible mid-season apples.
Mature size: Grows to around 3 metres tall and 60–80 cm wide, with a naturally slender, vertical form.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter to preserve its columnar shape. Remove dead, damaged, or inward-growing branches and thin out overcrowded spurs to maintain airflow. Avoid cutting back the central leader or heavily pruning side shoots, as this may affect its upright form and fruiting.
Deadheading: Not required for apple trees.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Apply an annual mulch of compost or well-rotted manure around the base (avoiding direct contact with the trunk) to improve soil health and conserve moisture.
Watering: Water consistently during dry spells and while the tree is establishing, flowering, or fruiting. Ensure soil is well-draining, especially if grown in containers, which may dry out more quickly.
Pest Control: Monitor for codling moth, aphids, and apple sawfly. Use pheromone traps and treat aphids with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed. Keep the area around the tree clear of fallen debris to reduce pest pressure.
Disease Management: 'Waltz' has good resistance to apple scab. Still, watch for signs of powdery mildew or canker. Maintain good airflow with proper pruning, remove any infected material, and apply a fungicide if necessary. Clean up fallen leaves and fruit to prevent reinfection.
