Thuja Smaragd is a compact, thin conifer known for its tidy, pyramid shape and brilliant green, scale-like leaves that hold their colour all year. The grade shown is the 90-120cm tall trees, great for individuals looking for a bushy, well-developed trees.
It thrives in a wide range of soil types, but prefers moist, well-drained conditions. Very versatile, it can handle full sun to part shade. It is a hardy plant that resists harsh winters and typically escapes damage from pests and diseases. It does, however, require protection against heavy winds.
Its dense, evergreen foliage and tall, straight growth make it an excellent privacy screen. Because of its regular shape, it's also a popular choice for formal hedging. Its architectural design makes it a striking specimen tree and its manageable size allows it to blend well with mixed borders.
Thuja Smaragd can reach heights of 3-4 metres when mature. However, its slow to moderate growth rate and adaptability to pruning make it simple to keep at a lower size if necessary.
Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
Trimming: Trim Thuja Smaragd in late spring or early summer to maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. Lightly prune any stray branches throughout the growing season to keep a neat appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive growth that may require more frequent trimming.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, Thuja Smaragd is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Monitor for spider mites and bagworms. Treat spider mite infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Handpick and destroy bagworms to prevent damage.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of root rot, especially in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering. Look out for browning or dying branches, which may indicate fungal infections. Prune affected areas and apply a suitable fungicide if necessary. Regularly inspect for any signs of disease and address issues promptly to maintain plant health.
