Podocarpus Totara is a durable, evergreen native conifer that offers dense, dark green foliage and a sturdy trunk that ages to an attractive, deeply grooved bark.
It adapts to a variety of soil types, provided they are well-drained, and tolerates full sun to partial shade and is exceptionally hardy, resisting both pests and diseases.
Owing to its dense foliage and substantial form, Podocarpus Totara serves as an excellent specimen tree, offering year-round interest. It is also ideal for creating lush, green hedges or as an effective windbreak in more exposed areas.
Upon reaching maturity, Podocarpus Totara can reach imposing heights of 20-30 metres. However, with appropriate pruning, it can be maintained at a smaller size, depending on your garden's needs.
Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
