Michelia figo - Field-Grown

After an instant effect in your garden? Our field-grown Magnolia Figo (pictured) stands at an impressive 60-90cm tall. This enchanting plant, also known as the Port Wine Magnolia, is a semi-evergreen shrub famous for its distinctively fragrant, creamy to light purple blossoms that emit a sweet, banana-like scent.

It thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions, appreciating a warm, sheltered spot. However, it can also tolerate cooler conditions, with good frost-hardiness. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil. Regular watering is necessary, particularly during dry periods, but overwatering or waterlogging should be avoided.

Its compact habit and its glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant flowers make it ideal for use as a specimen plant. It can also be grown as an effective screening plant for privacy or as part of a mixed border. For a touch of classic elegance, it can be shaped into a beautiful informal hedge or topiary.

At full maturity, the Michelia Figo can reach heights of 3-4 metres. However, with regular pruning and care, it can be kept at a more manageable height.

Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger sizes, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
