Buxus x Green Gem is a compact, slow-growing shrub with lush, glossy green foliage that retains its colour year-round. Known for its naturally rounded form and excellent cold tolerance, this cultivar requires minimal shaping, making it a reliable choice for low hedges, borders, or container planting.
Its tidy growth habit and evergreen structure suit formal, cottage, and urban gardens alike.
Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. For hedging, space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart to achieve a dense effect.
Mature size: Forms a neat, rounded shrub reaching about 90 cm high and wide.
Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring to maintain its dense, rounded shape. For hedges or topiary, additional light trims in mid to late summer will help retain definition, but avoid pruning too late in the season to prevent frost-sensitive new growth.
Deadheading: Not required, as this variety is grown for foliage rather than flowering.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds which can lead to weak, leggy growth.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the establishment phase and during extended dry periods. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring good drainage, especially in pots.
Pest Control: Check regularly for Buxus psyllid and leafminer—distorted or cupped leaves may be a sign. Treat with horticultural oil or an appropriate insecticide if necessary.
Disease Management: Prone to Buxus blight and root rot. Watch for black spots, rapid leaf drop, or dark streaks on stems. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and promptly remove affected parts. Treat with a fungicide where blight is confirmed.
