Juniperus squamata Blue Star, commonly known as the Blue Star Juniper, is a compact, slow-growing conifer with striking blue-grey foliage. This evergreen shrub forms a dense, mound-like habit, reaching heights of 30-90cm and widths of 30-120cm Its unique blue-grey, awl-shaped needles overlap densely in whorls of three, creating a visually appealing texture. The shrub produces bluish-berry-like seed cones, with each female cone bearing a single seed. It thrives in full sun and can adapt to a range of soil types, from well-drained to sandy soils. However, it is intolerant to wet conditions. This low-maintenance shrub is ideal for rock gardens, as a ground cover, or as a specimen plant. Its resilience against deer, drought, and poor soil conditions makes it a favoured choice for many gardeners. Moreover, its scaly bark and the ability to tolerate various environmental challenges, including pollution and erosion, add to its versatility in landscaping.
