Cryptomeria japonica Monstrosa Nana
Cryptomeria japonica Monstrosa Nana is an interesting Japanese Cedar cultivar with a very dense, fluffy look to it, yet the foliage is rather stiff and rigid. Displays good green colour during the warmer months but will turn a slight coppery-plum colour in winter. Very dense foliage with a somewhat flattened, globose growth habit and shape. As this plant matures, it will develop very stiff "clusters" of foliage throughout the plant.
Suits a variety of garden styles, including Japanese, rock, and contemporary gardens. It can be used as a focal point, in mixed borders, or as part of a conifer collection. Its unusual shape and dense foliage make it a perfect choice for creating visual interest and structure.
At maturity, this conifer reaches a height and spread of approximately 1.5-2.5m. For optimal growth, space the plants about 1.5-2m apart to allow them room to develop their distinctive form.
Trimming: Trim in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can negatively affect the plant's natural form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Fertilise sparingly, as this plant generally thrives in less fertile soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, ensure the soil remains consistently moist, particularly during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but occasionally susceptible to spider mites and aphids. If infestations occur, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of root rot and canker diseases. Ensure proper drainage and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Remove any affected plant parts and improve air circulation to minimise the risk of canker. Apply appropriate fungicides if necessary."
