Hydrangea petiolaris, commonly known as Climbing Hydrangea, is a deciduous climber native to the woodlands of Japan, the Korean peninsula, and easternmost Siberia. This vigorous vine clings to surfaces by aerial rootlets and can grow up to 9-15m in height and 2m in width. It produces masses of fragrant white lacecap-type flowers in late spring to early summer, which are held in flattened clusters measuring up to 20cm across. The foliage consists of heart-shaped, shiny, rich dark green leaves that turn golden-yellow in the fall. This plant is highly versatile and can be grown on masonry walls, sturdy trellises, or fences. It thrives best in part shade to full shade and prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils.
